I wanted love at first sight. I wanted a tall, light-skinned guy with a car. Then I met Dele, a God-fearing man. Although he wasn’t as tall as I would have liked, he was taller than I. Only he had a dark complexion and no car. I prayed about him and felt God was telling me that Dele was the man for me. I agreed to start a courtship.

After a year I wanted to break up the relationship because he didn’t have the qualities I initially looked for. I prayed to God that, if Dele was the man for me, my pastor should confirm it and that Dele should get a car. During a church meeting, my pastor gave me a word of knowledge that I should go ahead with a very important decision. A few weeks later Dele showed up on my doorstep with a car he had bought. Today I’m happily married. I don’t know what I would have done without the power of prayer. Never underestimate the power of prayer.

Lesson:

Prayer is essential to make your search for a life partner easy and joyful. Without it you will feel disillusioned and overburdened. You may pick the wrong partner when you are on the verge of finding the right one. That is why the Bible says in Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me, all you that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

In Isaiah 48: 17 -19, it says, “Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer… ‘I am the Lord your God…Who leads you by the way you should go…that you had heeded my commandments! Then your peace will be like a river…”

Prayer makes God’s ability available to us. As Christians, we should be aware that God’s strength and power are available to us. Our failure to do so is tantamount to ignorance, which exposes us to human weaknesses.

God guides, you choose

God has given you a free will. You, therefore, have the power to choose your partner. However, you first need to pray to God to give you a better understanding of yourself, to enable you to choose someone who can walk with you.

You need him to give you a discerning mind to know when you have found the right person. This means the onus is on you to find and to choose. You must know that it is not a walk in the park. Proverbs 31: 10 says: “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.”

The emphasis here is on ‘finding’ and ‘virtue’. There is no open-and-shut method for choosing a marriage partner; you need diligence and time. Above all, do not take any step until you have prayed. God choosing for you is God giving you the wisdom and the leading to find your ideal partner, someone who complements you.

God is our all-knowing Father and He always wants the best for us. He knows each and every one of us better than we know ourselves, better than we can even know each other. Consequently, He knows the right person for us; the one who will share our dreams and goals; the one who will complement our shortcomings; the one who will bring out the best in us; the one with whom we can fulfill his plans for us. Just ask and you will receive.
