More Than a Super Hero!

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us… Ephesians 3: 20.

As of May 22, 2018, the highly acclaimed movie Black Panther had raked 1.344 billion USD at the box office. This makes it the world’s ninth highest-grossing film of all time. Following closely after its release were the acclaimed movies: Avengers-Infinity Wars and Dead Pool 2, both climbed up the charts weekly.

Beyond the narrative arc and entertainment value of these movies, one thing is strikingly clear: The producers, Marvel Studios, understand the sentimental need many humans have to identify with a hero figure.

Think about it. Superheroes mirror our human need to outperform our physical and mental limitations. They model unprecedented realms of possibilities, feeding into our desire to grow and reach new milestones of accomplishments.

It is this desire that drives us to strive for excellence in our endeavours. It is what pushes us to keep improving our reality. So, we acquire new skills, stretch our limits, and go the extra mile.

At the heart of all these efforts is one simple truth: We want to do the impossible. Sadly, life in the natural realm is fraught with limitations, and our fascination with superhero movies offers, at best, a fleeting distraction from our current challenges.

Interestingly, for the Christian, the opposite is the case. Our claim to a life of possibilities is neither fleeting nor false. In our opening scripture, we see Paul writing to the Ephesian church about the efficacy of God’s power in the life of a believer.

It was this same power at work at the point of creation, bringing forth the sun out of nothing. This power split the Red Sea and led a stubborn and doubtful nation into their promised land. It raised the dead, fed people in thousands, and turned water into wine. Above all, it was this same power that raised Jesus Christ from death.

It is astonishing and humbling to think that this very power is at work in the life of every believer. But it is true. God is able to outperform your greatest dreams and wildest imagination. He is able to answer your prayers and still do extra.

He will heal your body, provide for your needs, bless your relationships and establish you. And He will do all these through His power at work in your life.

So rather than worry, why not take advantage of this grace that you already carry? You have the Holy Spirit inside of you. You have the Word of God.

You are supernatural. Let this mindset determine your response to challenges. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. You are a child of God.

You can and will overcome in Jesus name.
If you have not yet given your life to Christ, however, you cannot confidently say you are a child of God and cannot lay claim to His promises.

Why not surrender your heart to Him now? If you would like to, then pray this prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank you for dying that I might live. Today, I confess that I am a sinner. I ask that you forgive me my sins and come into my heart. I receive the gift of eternal life and welcome your Spirit into my life. Amen.
